32 Sex workers Sentenced to Jail in Lagos

Thirty-two (32) out of the fifty-two (52) sex workers arrested by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit have been sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for engaging in acts inimical to public peace and safety. The hearing of their case was held at the Special Offences Court at Alausa, Ikeja, Southwest Nigeria, on Tuesday with the Attorney General of Lagos State standing as the prosecutor. The sex workers were convicted on a three-count charge and sentenced according to the gravity of each of the charges.

The first count charge was for being disorderly persons by placing themselves on the road “road for illegal purpose to wit”. For this count charge, the sex workers were found guilty, convicted, and sentenced to two months imprisonment without an option of fine.
The second count charge was for conducting themselves “in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace”. And for this, they were also found guilty, convicted, and sentenced to one month imprisonment with an option of N10, 000 fine each.
The third count charge was for “unlawfully obstructing” one Superintendent Taiwo. For this offence also, they were found guilty, convicted, and sentenced to one month imprisonment with an option of N10, 000 fine each. The remaining 20 will be arraigned in court soon and may face similar fate that befell their colleagues, if found guilty.
